Albi

Located in the Sila Piccola SPA in the province of Catanzaro, Albi is the most accessible town from among the mountain paths in the park. Standing at 710 metres above sea level, its climate is mild in winter and cool in summer, since the city is surrounded by mountains and protected by the Silano mountain range.
In a reference to the white colour of the stones that surround the city it is assumed that the town’s name originates in the Latin “albus” (white), but the lack of documentation and the uncertainty of the information suggest a further possible derivation, according to which the name of the city dates back to Agostino Albi, at the time the owner of the land on which the first settlement occurred. In view of this latter theory, the origins of Albi would date back to the period of the Norman conquest, as a result of which the town became a Universitas in 1529; later it fell under the control of the Spanish, whose passing presence is attested to today by the remains of the castle and visible fortifications referred to as “del Torrazzo”; Bourbon rule followed from 1734 onwards, in which certain families such as the Garcea and the Curia, with their bourgeois mansions, played a role.
A devastating earthquake in 1783 resulted in the loss of much of the city’s beauty, which was recovered in part by reconstruction work. Despite this there are still many nature trails and historical and cultural sites to visit in this small village, with its characteristic narrow lanes that wind between the fine works of art preserved in churches such as the chiesa dell’Oliveto (Church of the Olive Grove) and that dedicated to Sts. Peter and Paul.
The hospitality of the people, their generosity, and parties and festivals almost all year round make one’s stay an authentic and enjoyable experience.
Not to mention the festival of the patron saint, which the earnest devotion to St. Nicholas makes a time of great celebration and sharing of faith.
